The Vegan choice

For health:

Well-planned vegan diets contain all the nutrients our body needs and are suitable for all ages and stages of life.

Some research has linked vegan diets to lower blood pressure and cholesterol and lower rates of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers.

Experimenting with vegan cooking is a great opportunity to learn more about the most suitable nutrition for humans and improve your diet to live a healthier and longer life.

Whole grains, fruits, nuts, seeds and vegetables are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

For animals:

Considering the above, it is clear that the exploitation and killing of animals for food consumption is no longer a real necessity.

SOME EXAMPLES OF EXPLOITATION:

Cows could live well beyond 20 years, while on dairy farms they are usually killed between 3-4 years when milk production is no longer considered 'profitable'. Cows raised for meat (beef) are killed first.
• Broiler chicks are killed at 6 weeks old, they have grown too fast to support their own weight and heart when killed. Chickens can live up to 10 years.
• Pigs are slaughtered between 4-6 months of age, while they could reach 15 years.
• Sheep can also live up to 15 years, but depending on whether they are slaughtered as lambs or later, they are shot and bled to death between 3-10 months of age.
• Every week in the UK 3,000 male calves are killed shortly after birth, usually within days.
Over 40 million chicks born just the day before are killed every year, including those from organic farms, this is because Males do not secrete body fluids intended for offspring (cow's milk), nor lay eggs as hens do.

For the environment:

The production of meat and other animal products places a heavy burden on the environment - from the crops and water needed to feed the animals, to the transportation and other processes involved from farm to fork. The large amount of grain feed required for meat production contributes significantly to deforestation, habitat loss and species extinction. In Brazil alone, the equivalent of 5.6 million acres of land is used to grow animal soybeans for Europe. This land contributes to the development of world malnutrition by pushing poor populations to grow crops for animal feed rather than for food for themselves. On the other hand, significantly less crops and water are required to support a vegan diet, making the transition to veganism one of the simplest, funniest and most effective ways to reduce our impact on the environment.
